Introduction

David pleaded with God to keep him from falling into evil. We too should pray to God.

What should we pray for?

1. I prayed that I would not sin with my mouth (verse 3).

“Lord, set a watchman around my lips, and a gatekeeper before my mouth.”

This is because a person can sin with his mouth and perish. The author of Isaiah said, "Then I said, Woe to me, for I am a man of unclean lips, and in the midst of a people of unclean lips I have seen the King, the LORD of hosts" (Isaiah 6:5). There are many sins committed with the lips. You can curse (Psalm 109:17-19), criticize (Matthew 7:3), and bless (Proverbs 11:11). So the writer of James told us to watch out for our tongues (James 3:1-12).

2. We prayed that we would not share in evil (verse 4).

“Do not incline my heart to evil. Hang out with those who do evil, and help them avoid doing evil. Please do not eat their supper.”

When a person is in trouble and there is no solution, there is a possibility that the solution can be solved by joining hands with the wicked. Therefore, the more we face difficulties, the more we pray to God (Psalm 50:15). However, there are cases where, rather than praying, we seek an easy way and join hands with the wicked. This does not solve the problem, but rather complicates it. The psalmist said that the blessed do not walk in the counsel of the wicked. And he said that blessed are those who do not depend on a life that does not have the strength to help but put their hope in the God of Jacob (Psalm 146:2-5).

3. I prayed for renunciation of greed (verse 4).

“Please don’t eat their supper.”

Because man needs to eat to live, there is a great chance that he will sin because of what he eats. Adam also sinned before God because of eating. Daniel rejected the king's delicacies (Daniel 1:12-15). Still, a miracle occurred that his face did not deteriorate. Those who are greedy eat even food sacrificed to idols. The psalmist said, "They also ate food sacrificed to the dead in association with Baal peor plagues were among them” (Psalm 106:28-29). You must eat whatever kind of food you have left or right, and you must not eat anything that is a crime. That is why the Apostle Paul said, “Whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10:31).

conclusion

I prayed that King David would not sin with his mouth, prayed that he would not sin with the wicked, and prayed that he would not sin by eating. Then, we also think that praying like David is the attitude the saints living in today's age will take.
