Koreans live with a unique sadness that the rest of the world does not have. This inherent sorrow is the ‘han’ of our people. Humans have emotions of joy and sorrow. These feelings are natural and God-given. The noun 'sorrow' appears '27 times' in the Bible, but '2' in the New Testament. The verb 'to be sad' occurs 69 times, but it appears 8 times in the New Testament. This is a lot of sorrow in the Old Testament. The law gives sorrow, trouble, sin, and sorrow. As Paul said, if we live in the law, sin will come alive, sorrow will come alive, and joy will die.
1. There is always sorrow in everyone (verse 8).
Anxiety and sadness are not far from anyone. Anxiety and sorrow are with you, and if you look closely, they are within you. The Bible lists various causes of sorrow. When a spouse dies, when a child dies, when a child becomes ill, and life itself is sorrow. Sadness is an essential emotion that God has given to humans, and the biggest factor is death. The greatest cause of sorrow for man is death, and death is the result of sin. No one can avoid this.
2. Worldly sorrow is death.
“A joy of the heart is good medicine, but a sorrow of the spirit dries up the bones” (Proverbs 17:22).
“Godly sorrow produces repentance that leads to salvation, which cannot be regretted, but worldly sorrow produces death” (2 Corinthians 7:10).
“The sorrows of the world bring death,” he says. The sorrow of the world is itself death. Just betraying and mourning God is not going to help you in life. Such causes rebellion and distrust, leading to sin and death. Worldly sorrow is a disease that leads to death. Worldly sorrow is sorrow for oneself and sorrow for worldly values. Anything without eternal value is already dead in this world. How many people die of worldly cares and sorrows. We should not grieve over such sorrow.
3. Spiritual sorrow produces repentance (v. 18).
Godly sorrow can lead to repentance because it brings about inner change. True sorrow is sorrow for sin and a conscience that feels sorry for the sinful nature. David was very sad for his sin and said that he wet the mattress with his tears. Peter's mourning brought him to recovery, and these sorrows and mourning are comforting. Spiritual sorrow, not worldly sorrow, leads to repentance, joy, and salvation.
