Psalm 42 is the prayer of a person in crisis. It is most likely that this psalm is a poem of David. In particular, when King Saul persecuted him, David had to move from place to place to such a degree that there was hardly any place he did not escape.
The title of this poem is ??The song of the descendants of Masgil and Gora sung by the conductor. The ‘sons of Korah’ were those who were in charge of singing after David’s time. They were primarily responsible for compiling and archiving hymns, many of which are thought to be those of David. And ??Masgil?? means 'a lesson poem', which means a poem that gives various teachings. In fact, the poetry of Asaph and the poetry of the Korahites are characterized by many instructive content. However, this poem is more of a confession of faith than a teaching poem.
There are times in our lives when our hearts are broken. When do we become offended?
1. I am offended by not being able to communicate with other people at all (verse 3).
“The tears I shed day and night have become my food” means to shed a lot of tears. As you continue to shed tears, the tears enter your mouth and your nose. Your entire face is covered with tears. I am confessing that I shed tears as if eating a meal because of how many tears I shed.
What causes this saint to shed so many tears?
Even those closest to him didn't understand why he was so hungry. This is what I mean at best. “Why on earth do you believe so strangely?” And they go a step further and criticize them by saying, “Where is the God you are so desperately calling for and seeking?” There is God's grace that is so beautiful and precious, and we are hurt when no one understands it or believes it.
2. Losing the fellowship of precious saints is heartbreaking (verse 4).
Before, there was a thrilling worship service shared with the saints, and there was fellowship of the saints. At that time, this saint was the conductor of the choir. So he led people to the house of God while conducting the people's hymns. Then there were great words, great praise, great prayer, and great power. At that time, I do not know how many people gathered to worship God, how many wept, and how much joy they rejoiced. This is the moment to taste revival.
However, there are people who are completely unaware of this thrill. They do not feel the need to pray when they ask to pray. I know that money is everything. And even if you ask them to gather, why do you keep bothering people? When the moment of revival passes, people think that their thoughts are everything. So they try not to move in their lying position.
The saints cannot help but be offended when they see other people not acknowledging the great work of the Holy Spirit, thinking that all things are human, and losing their faith. There is something greater and greater, and I am frustrated as to why these people do not believe in the power of God.
3. Anxiety and discouragement keep growing in my heart and I get hurt (verse 5).
This saint has been depressed because he has not heard the word of God for a long time. When the mind is depressed, it means that worry or anxiety has been prolonged for a long time and cannot be recovered by one's own strength. That is why his heart is always discouraged, and rather, he continues to fall into stagnation like this.
It comes to mind, ‘What is the use of receiving God’s grace because I have longed for God’s grace for nothing, I can’t get along with the people around me, I have no joy in everything, and I’m critical. The crux of the matter lies right here. In other words, I now have no motivation and no power. That's why I want to give up everything and I only have a sense of victimization that I want to run away from.
What is God's voice we can hear at that time? God never leaves us, and God never leaves us alone. The fact that there are people who yearn for the Word of God and are so thirsty is proof that the church is still alive and not dead. If even this person gives up his thirst for the Word, the light of the church will be completely extinguished.
There is a saying, “The deeper the night, the nearer the dawn”. So, when a believer sees that his heart is so thirsty and unbearable, he thinks that God will pour out His grace like a shower of rain soon. That's why he says, "Only hope in God." Because God never gives us this hunger in vain. If there is a thirst, there is always the grace of the Holy Spirit pouring out.
What we do when we are discouraged and anxious is unbelief and sin. Our long drowning in stagnation is in itself a refusal to acknowledge the power of God. In difficult and difficult times, we should look only to God. If God shows his face just once, all the problems in my life will be solved. You will be born again as a strong soldier of God by breaking free from spiritual stagnation. The economic problem will also be resolved, and the real estate will be restored. The sickness will go away, and all who are in weakness will be healed and made strong.
“My soul, why are you so discouraged, and why are you so afflicted? you wait for God Now I will praise my God again, my Savior” (Psalm 42:11).
