Among the characters in the Bible, we want to live by imitating the people of faith that God is pleased with and loved. David succeeded in the midst of failures in his life, received mercy before God in the midst of his sins, and was protected from the threat of the enemy through his religious life.
What was David's life like?
First, I repented thoroughly (verses 1-2).
When David was pointed out by the prophet Nathan of his sin, he immediately humbly accepted the rebuke and repented so thoroughly that he wet his bed and mattress with tears before God.
“Turn your eyes away from my sins and take away all my iniquities. O God, create in me a pure heart and renew my inward spirit” (Psalm 51:9-10).
When we realize our sins through the Word of God, we must immediately and thoroughly repent of our sins without hesitation. God promises to show mercy to those who repent and to give the Holy Spirit as a gift (Acts 2:38).
Second, he possessed sincerity and purity (verses 6-7).
In the original language, ‘truth’ means ‘inner purity without deceit in heart’, and ‘purity’ means ‘cleanliness and purity’. When you look at David's prayers before God because he wants to live a life of truth and purity, you can see how much he valued sincerity and purity. Also, ‘hyssop’ was used as a ceremonial that when the leprosy person was cured, he could live with everyone. David asked God to purify his soul, which had been polluted with sin, through a purification ceremony. God delights in living pure and clean.
Third, we cried out and prayed day and night.
“Lord, God who saved me, day and night I cry before you” (Psalm 88:1).
David lived a life of faith that cried out in the daytime and in the night (Psalm 88:1). God always answers the prayers of those who cry out (Psalm 22:5). At a time when the devil prowls around looking for someone to devour, we must live a life of faith that calls out day and night. (Luke 18:7) “Will not God avenge the elect, who cry out day and night? Will you be patient with us?”
The Reformer John Knox said, "If you love life, love prayer." The Roman poet Oedius said, "Tomorrow's prayer casts out fear."
Dear saints,
In the name of the Lord, I pray that you will always be filled with the Holy Spirit by following David's faith and leading a life of faith with thorough repentance, a life of sincerity and purity, and a life of faith that cries out day and night.
