Why should we thank God?
1. We should give thanks and give thanks in everything. Verse 1)
(Text 1) says, "We thank the Lord and give thanks again." We have many things to thank God for. Because all our good things come from God. Our life, our talents, our health, our daily bread, our family, our church, and our country are all God-given. In particular, our salvation and heaven are gifts from God. Therefore, we should give thanks to God with abundant thanksgiving in everything.
2. Because he judges the arrogant (verses 4-5).
He tells the arrogant not to be arrogant, and not to lift up the arrogant horn. An arrogant person is one who does evil against the will of God. The expression ‘lifting up the horns’ refers to ‘acting proudly as if boasting of strength’. He also tells them, "Do not lift up your arrogant horns, keep your necks straight, and do not speak arrogantly" (v. 5). Pride is a foolish thing because it is the attitude of a person who is not aware of his sinfulness and worthlessness in the sight of God. God hates pride very much.
(Proverbs 6:16-17) “There are six things the LORD hates, seven things that are detestable in his heart: haughty eyes, and a deceitful tongue....” Pride perishes a person. (Proverbs 16:18) "Pride precedes destruction, and a haughty heart precedes stumbling."
We must not be arrogant. We should not try to be exalted in human ways, but only rely on God and be faithful before God.
3. Because He loves us who are weak (verse 10).
The psalmist speaks of the judgment of God's wrath against the wicked. He describes it as "the Lord is holding a cup of foam..." (verse 8). It is the cup of God's wrath. He also says, "The cup is filled with the spices of wrath." It symbolizes the great wrath of God. God's wrath is not a proper wrath, but a fearful and terrible wrath. Also, he said, "All the wicked of this land must eat and drink, and even lick their dross" indicates the thoroughness of God's wrath. God will pour out all His wrath, and the wicked will receive all His wrath.
The psalmist now praises the God of Jacob. “But without ceasing I will declare only the Lord, and praise only the God of Jacob” (verse 9). The expression 'Jacob's God' refers to the God who loved, patient, and trained Jacob in spite of his human weaknesses. He proclaims and praises the God of Jacob because he had compassion on his feeble people and punished their wicked enemies with justice.
“The Lord will break every arrogant horn of the wicked, and He will lift up the proud horn of the righteous” (verse 10). The power of the wicked may seem temporarily great and strong, but God will break them all and destroy them. And even though the power of the righteous may seem weak now, God will strengthen it and raise it up high.
We must realize God's wrath against the wicked. Also, praise and testify to the 'God of Jacob' who loved the weak like us.
