In the Psalms we read today, the righteous are compared to a palm tree that grows tall and a cedar that soars high. They said that they would be planted in the garden of God, and they would grow and bear fruit even when they grow old, and they would be full of sap and always green. Since the home is the place God made, it can be compared to a cedar tree that is like a palm tree with lush leaves and soaring high.
What should our home look like?
First, the family must be built with strong faith based on the Word (verse 12).
What sets the home apart from the general group is that it is built upon the Word of God. A family cannot be said to be a correct family unless it is a family that hears and practices the word of God. The family cannot exist without the gospel because it is an institution built on the gospel of Christ and to establish the kingdom of God while spreading the gospel. Therefore, in order for a family to become a true family, one must thoroughly know the Word of God and have the ability to discern the core of the gospel.
Second, the family must be deeply rooted in love (verse 13).
What I want to note here is the word “rooted”. In order for a tree to grow large, above all else, it must have strong roots. If the roots are not deeply rooted, they will not grow large and are easily shaken by the wind and fall over. Trees with deep roots do not dry out in drought and do not easily fall over by typhoons. Even if the branch is broken, the tree itself does not fall easily.
In the same way, the family can stand firm and unshaken even in the face of various trials when its roots are deeply rooted.
(Ephesians 3) We are praying for "that you may be rooted and established in love so that, with all the saints, you may realize the breadth, length, height, and depth of the love of Christ." It is said to be rooted in love. We mentioned earlier that families should be built on the soil of God's word. However, since the center of the Word is love, the family is ultimately rooted in love.
When God created the heavens and the earth, He did it out of love, made love the foundation of the created world, and in love made the world move. Therefore, when you realize this love more deeply and take root in it, your family will be firmly established. Especially when we can truly know the breadth, length, height, and depth of Christ's love 'with all the family', the family will stand firm on the unshakable rock of longevity. A family is a community of many people, and since they love each other, when they are entangled in love, this community will stand stronger.
Third, the family must be renewed in hope (verses 14-15).
A life rooted in God means that it can always be renewed. Likewise, the family can be renewed day by day as long as it is deeply rooted in God's love. Because God's love is eternal, a home will never decay or run out when it is supplied with life from it. When a family becomes a human community, it will prosper at one time and then decline, but when it is rooted in the word of God and its love, it always produces new, always beautiful fruits, and its light is always green, which can give joy and rest to many people.
