“Give thanks to Jehovah”
Psalm 136:1-9. Reasons to be grateful 1. 2006. 7.9. Sunday Glory Worship
Verses 1-3, “Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good and his mercy endures forever. / Give thanks to God, who is superior to all gods… ."
This section gives a general reason for giving thanks to Jehovah God. Something? For God is good and His mercy endures forever. Here, 'Son of man' is 'Hesed' in Hebrew, and it is a word that expresses 'God's love' along with the Greek 'Agape'. 'Agape' means 'God's unconditional love', and this 'hesed' refers to 'God's infinitely deep and wide love'. Again, 'agape' emphasizes the qualitative characteristics of God's love, and 'hesed' emphasizes the quantitative infinity of God's love.
And he said to give thanks to the "God who is superior to all gods and to the Lord who is superior to all lords." According to the Bible, there was a constant temptation that God's people Israel had. It was the thought and temptation to compare the gods in Egypt, the gods in the wilderness and in the land of Canaan, with God. This is like the temptation we face in today's life. But everyone! There is no God in the world that can compare or replace God. There is no object and glory in the world to depend on more than God. Ex 15:11, After crossing the Red Sea like land, Moses said, “O LORD! Who among the gods is like the Lord? Who is like the Lord, glorious in holiness, and majestic to be praised, and who does marvelous works?” It was God who parted the Red Sea.
In 2 Samuel 7:22, David heard the prophecy from the prophet Nathan that, unlike the dynasty of Saul, “Your house and your kingdom will be preserved before me forever, and your throne will be established forever.” He said, “O LORD God! Therefore you are vast, for as our ears have heard, there is no one like you, and there is no true god but you.”
1 Kings 8:23 So Solomon, who had built the temple, stood in front of the altar of the LORD, facing all the congregation of Israel, and stretched out his hands toward heaven, saying, "O LORD, the God of Israel! There is no god like you in the heavens and the earth. You keep your covenant and show grace to your servants who walk in your presence with all your heart.”
1 Chronicles 17:20, “O LORD! As we have heard with our ears, there is no one like you, and there is no true god but you.” Psalm 86:8, “Lord! Among the gods there is no one like you, nor like your works.” Jeremiah 10:6, “O LORD! There is no one like you. You are great, and your name is great because of your power.” Micah 7:18, “What god is like you? You forgive iniquity, and pass over the transgression of the remnant of his inheritance, and because you delight in kindness, you do not always harbor anger. Don't be fooled. There is no god in the world to replace God. The most profound and broad, loving God! God is incomparable to anything in the world! He is me and our God. So Joshua said that for me and my house, we would only serve the Lord.
;4-9, "Give thanks to him who alone works great wonders... / Give thanks to him who in wisdom made the heavens... / Give thanks to him who spread out the earth on the waters... / Who made the great lights... Give thanks to him... / Give thanks to him who made the sun rule the day... / Give thanks to him who made the moon and the stars rule the night, for his mercy endures forever." This part reminds us that the greatest work that God has done for us (man) is the work of creation. "He alone (bad/hi) works great wonders..." Jehovah is unparalleled. He is the only God. With absolute power and authority, God created the heavens and the universe, a wonderful work that no idol or man could ever do, a work of creation. "He who made the heavens with wisdom" (;5).., no matter how much human knowledge and science advance, there is no way to fully grasp and understand that infinite space world that God created with His wisdom. "He who spread the earth on the water..."(;6) On the 3rd day of the creation of the heavens and the earth, the water and dry land were separated, so we can still enjoy the space of the earth where humans can live.
;7, in "He who made the great lights", the 'great lights' are the lights that are distinct from the sun, moon, and stars in verse 8 and below, and are the lights that were made on the first day of the creation, that is, the It refers to the underlying energy (force). And also, by making "the sun, the moon, and the stars" to rule "day and night", a date and an age were created for man, and an environment was created in which to judge things and conduct activities. In this way, God created man only after he first made the whole universe perfect. It means the grace of God in which all nature has prepared the optimal living environment for man in advance. Man did not by chance evolve better in nature to become the primate of all things. God originally planned and created them as beings to be fruitful, multiply, replete, subdue, and rule the earth to glorify God. In this way, the space world in which people live in breathlessness, the time system in which people live while enjoying the cold. The very fact that we are enjoying God's love is proof that we are receiving abundant love from God.
Through the basic environment of home, loved ones were able to meet and create a home called home. Education was achieved through teaching and learning in the school grounds. Likewise, if the space-time of this universe and the Earth is not prepared and maintained every moment, no one can survive. Dear all! An unbreakable roof, who gave the sky? The floor that never goes out, who gave the land? Who made the boundary between sea and land? That vast celestial body, who rotates the universe without an inch of error? Who was the one who maintained this immovable base of the space-time world for the sake of human existence? Isaiah 44:24, “Thus says the LORD, your Redeemer, who formed you in your womb. I am the LORD who made all things. He stretched out the heavens and spread the earth by himself without anyone with me.” The only person who can perform such 'great wonders' can truly be the only true God, the Almighty and Absolute God, Jehovah God.
Dear saints, To this God who created the universe and the world in the beginning with your wisdom and power, and who has provided and made all these things perfect for the survival of each one of us to this day, indeed, Jehovah God who is “superior to all gods.” I hope that you will become the saints of thanksgiving.
