Bible text: 1 Samuel 17:55-58
servant of the Lord
David is the youngest of Jesse's eight sons. The father told the youngest to visit his son who was in the military. David prepared food and went on an errand to the battlefield, and came to the camp of the Israeli army, which faced the Philistine army. At the same time, Goliath, the leader of the Philistine army, cried out to the Israelites, “Choose one man and send him down to me. If he kills me, we will be your servants; if I overcome and kill him, you will become our servants and serve us. ” (1 Samuel 17:8-9). That's right. The loser becomes the servant of the overcomer. When sin overcomes me, I become a slave to sin, and the slave to sin leads to death (Romans 1:16). When David returned with Goliath's head cut off, King Saul asked. “...boy whose son are you?” David answered. “I am your servant, the son of Jesse the Bethlehemite” (verse 58). What is the condition of your servant?
A person who has the Spirit of the Lord
The servant of the Lord must have the Spirit of the Lord. Without the Spirit of the Lord, we cannot become the servants of the Lord. The Lord told Samuel the prophet that I had already abandoned Saul to become king of Israel. Fill your horns with oil and go to Jesse the Bethlehemite, saying that I have chosen a king from among his sons. Samuel trembled and said, “According to the word of the Lord, when they came to Bethlehem, they found the king of Israel chosen by God from among the sons of Jesse, and this is David.
Samuel anointed David with oil from the horn, and from that day on, David was greatly moved by the Spirit of the Lord. This is how the Common Translation Bible is translated. “It is this child. Go ahead and pour oil on this child. So Samuel filled the horn with oil and anointed him in front of his brothers. Then the Spirit of the Lord came upon David and remained on him where he was to be given from that day.” (1 Samuel 16:13) The Spirit of the Lord abided in David, making him a servant of the Lord. When the power of alcohol penetrates your body, you lose focus and your legs shake. When you're drunk, your tongue swells up, you can't speak properly, your vision becomes blurry, and when you're sullen, you scream and punch. When you are filled with the Holy Spirit, you will prophesy, see visions, and have dreams (Acts 2:17). The servant of the Lord is the one whose spirit of God controls the soul.
“...If anyone has the Spirit of Christ, he is not of Christ” (Romans 8:9). Let the Spirit of the Lord be your servant. The reason why the boy David could say that he was “I am the servant of the Lord” was because he received the Spirit of the Lord.
“For all those who are led by the Spirit of God are the sons of God. You did not receive the spirit of bondage any longer to fear, but because you have received the spirit of adoption, we cry, Abba, Father. You testify that you are a child of God” (Romans 8:14-16).
The Spirit of the Lord is not the spirit of fearful servants, but the spirit of courage that gives courage. The Spirit of the Lord will follow you and bring you to glory. The Spirit of the Lord is the Spirit that gives life to mortal bodies, and it is the Spirit that calls God Abba Father.
The awareness of being a servant of the Lord, the conviction of being a servant of the Lord, and the identity of being a servant of the Lord are given by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. It is an emotion that allows the Spirit of God to accept God's will and God's power. “David himself, moved by the Holy Spirit, said, ‘David is Lord, how can you be his descendant?’” (Mark 12:36-37). Although Jesus is the son of David physically (Matthew 1:1), it means that David called Christ “Lord” by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. Like David, I hope that you will be greatly moved by the Spirit of the Lord and become your servant.
A person who has the heart of the Lord
To become a servant of the Lord, you must have the same heart as your master. The servant of the Lord must be more like his master than whether he is capable or incompetent. Even stealing requires courage. David is a man trusted by God. God overthrew Saul and chose a new king. "The LORD said to Samuel, "Do not look at his appearance or his height; I do not look like men; man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart." heard in Jesus looked at Nathanael and said, “Behold, this is an Israelite, and there is no deceit in him” (John 1:47). People look at the outward appearance, but God looks at the heart. The mind is more important than the intellect. “The foundation of man is the heart.”
Eliab, the eldest son of Jesse, was the first of all. Samuel thought it was this man whom the Lord would anoint. But God said no. I saw the second Abinadab, and it was a good cover model. Samma is an intelligent person who likes books. In this way, the seven sons were judged, but all failed without passing grades. When your son asked if this was all he said, the youngest was tending sheep in the field. Samuel told him to bring him. He sent and brought David, and the LORD said, "This is the man, so get up and anoint him with oil" (1 Samuel 16:12).
God looked at David tending the sheep in the field. You did not see his face made up, but he saw his honesty and sincerity in his daily life. David was the youngest son to be born, and he listened to the scoldings of his brothers and stayed with the sheep until late. God noticed the boy leading the sheep through the mountains of Bethlehem. He saw the heart that was quietly doing what he had to do while doing boring and tedious work.
“Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus, who, though in the form of God, humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of a cross” (Philippians 2:5-8). It is a heart, a heart that is in accord with the heart of God.
To be in harmony with God's heart means to have the same personality and thoughts as God. The condition of human resources that God is looking for is the heart of the Lord. It's not because he's tall, nor because he's from a good family. “I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after my own heart, and he will do all my will” (Acts 13:22). 14) What God sees is the heart. “God searches the hearts of men” (Psalm 7:9).
The boy David was responsible as a shepherd. He had a stick in his hand to keep the flock safe. When a beast appeared, a stone was thrown. He studied and labored to increase the flock. The servant of the Lord must be in harmony with the Lord. May your hearts become servants of the Lord according to the heart of God.
A person who lives for the Lord
The servant of the Lord lives not for himself, but for the Lord. Whether we live or die for the Lord, it is for the Lord. Life or death, it is the Lord's. I live for the joy of the Lord, not my joy.
David always looks to God for strength. He does not hear Goliath's cry I don't mind the mocking noises. He is not conscious of the contemptuous gaze. We listen to God's voice and look to Almighty God.
Goliath said to Israel, “Why did you come out and fight? Choose one man and send him down to me. ...If you fight and kill me, we will be your servants; if I overcome and kill him, you will become our servants and serve us” (1 Samuel 17:8-9) Hearing these words, David cried out to Goliath. Who is this uncircumcised Philistine to insult the armies of the living God? (verse 26) Those who have the Spirit of the Lord and have the heart of the Lord fight for the name of the Lord. Your servant is the one who lives for you, fights for your name, and if you die, you will die.
These words were delivered to King Saul. Saul called David, and said, "David said to Saul, Do not be discouraged because of him. Your servant will go and fight that Philistine” (verse 32). Saul was worried, saying, “You are a young man, and he has been a mighty man from his youth” (verse 33). If this comes and grabs the young from the flock...I will take the beard and slay it. Your servant has also struck down lions and bears; is it this uncircumcised Philistine who judges the host of God, and he shall become like one of the beasts (verse 36). And he said, "The LORD has delivered me from the claw of the lion and from the paw of the bear; he will also deliver me from the hand of this Philistine" (verse 37).
“David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come to you in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have insulted. Today the LORD will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you against your head. and give them to the birds of the air and to the wild beasts of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel, and that this multitude will know that the LORD saves not with sword and spear. into his hand” (verses 45-47).
Your servant, your name is power. The name of God never leaves David's mouth. He is his servant. Go out in your name and fight in your name. We triumph in the name of the Lord. The servant of the Lord glorifies his office (Romans 11:13). The despised cross is the one who takes up the cross and gives glory to God. It is immortal to live for the Lord, fight for the Lord, and die for the Lord.
A servant has duties and missions given to him by his master. A servant has a personal relationship with his master. The master trusts the servant and the servant trusts the master.
A servant of the Lord is one who has the Spirit of the Lord. Those who do not have the Spirit of the Lord cannot become the servants of the Lord. He is always moved by the Spirit of the Lord. He is a person who fears Him not with temporary excitement, but with constant inspiration. A servant of the Lord is one who has been moved by the Spirit of the Lord.
A servant of the Lord is one who has a heart for the Lord. “Who has known the heart of the Lord, and who has been his counselor?” (Romans 11:34) A counselor is a counselor. A servant with the same heart as the Lord becomes a counselor who consults with his master. “A prudent servant will rule over his master’s son, and he will divide his inheritance among his sons” (Proverbs 17:2).
A servant of the Lord is one who lives for the Lord. It is to work for the benefit of the master. Doing your work is your servant. “...whether by life or death, it is in my body that Christ may be exalted” (Philippians 1:20). “You are my servant, Israel, whom I will glorify” (Isaiah 49:3). Be a servant of the Lord like David.
