Matthew 26:30-35 Sin! can win
So, if we sin, we fail to achieve the glory of God, the purpose of God's creation. Therefore, we must not sin. But we sin from time to time. He struggles not to sin, but he can hardly overcome it. What is the secret to overcoming the sin that blocks the glory of God? Today we want to learn about the failure method that cannot overcome sin and the successful method that can overcome sin. First, it is a method of failure that cannot overcome sin.
1. It is not decided.
Resolving not to sin does not mean that you can overcome sin.
Someone's confession. “I had a recurring sin that was embarrassing to tell others. I vowed never to repeat that sin again. But the results were in vain. No matter how much I made up my mind, I kept committing sins over and over again. I finally decided to write a blood book. I bit my finger with my mouth. Tried to write a blood letter by cutting off his finger. However, only the fingers hurt, and the fingers did not cut well with the teeth. So I bit my finger again with all my might. But no blood came out. I have given up bleeding from my mouth. And with a razor, I cut off the tip of my finger a little. Finally, blood came out of my finger. I decided not to repeat that sin again and wrote a blood note. And I put it on my desk. But it was a three-day affair. I committed that sin again after three days. I cried in front of the blood book. I cried while writhing and squeezing blood. I realized I couldn't do it by resolution.”
Guys, aren't we often like this too? If I were to ask you this question, how would you answer it? “Were you able to overcome sin with your resolve?” If you can clearly answer this question, “Yes, I can overcome sin,” then you are truly a great person. No, maybe it's not human.
This is today's main story. Jesus said to his disciples. “Tonight you will all forsake me, as it is written, I will strike the shepherd, and the flock will be scattered. But after I am risen, I will go before you into Galilee.” Then Peter said. “Even if they all forsake you, I will never forsake you.” But Jesus tells Peter. “Truly I tell you, tonight before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times,” said Peter, resolutely. “Even if I die with you, I will not deny you.”
Gentlemen, Peter was determined to follow the Lord even in death. What a great decision indeed. But that night, Peter answered three times that he did not know the Lord. Surely a while ago, I had decided, “Even if I die with you, I will not deny you.” But I broke that decision in just a few hours, not three days. Gentlemen, human resolution cannot completely overcome sin.
2. Not as a person.
Can you overcome sin if you cultivate your character well? Have you ever heard of ‘Dr Jekyll and Hyde’? In a village, there was a man named Dr. Jekyll who treated the poor for free and loved the locals. Dr. Jekyll was such a great person that everyone in the town respected him. However, robbers appeared in the village every night and tormented the people. The robber named himself ‘Hyde’ and was seldom caught harassing the locals.
Then one day, the police succeeded in arresting the robber named Hydra. But everyone was surprised. The robber was none other than Dr. Jekyll. He was a character by day and a demon by night. Gentlemen, these are the two aspects of human beings. People, says Pascal, are intermediates in the form of angels and demons.
3. You don't even have to clean the sword.
Can you overcome sin by cultivating the Way? The bottom line is that no matter how much you practice the Way, you cannot overcome sin. A few years ago, a very famous monk in Korea, Seongcheol, passed away, and in Buddhism, it is said that he passed away. “Did you come here? did you come to see me? i'm a liar Don't be fooled by me. I'm a scumbag with a pannon sitting on the floor. Don't be fooled by me."
1. You just have to go crazy with wholesome things.
Ladies and gentlemen, the secret to overcoming the darkness is to turn on a light without having to shout for the darkness to go away, and the darkness will naturally go away. The secret to not going west is to go east. The secret to overcoming sin is if it extends to wholesome work, you can naturally shun sin. Busy bees have no time to grieve. He who is driven by work has no time to sin.
Edison is the king of inventions with the greatest number of inventions in human history. He's been in the lab all his life. I lived 18 hours out of 24 hours a day doing research in the lab. One time the disciples asked. “When do teachers do hobbies?” At this point, Edison said. “I never worked. I’m only doing my hobbies 18 hours a day.” In other words, working was his hobby. He devotes himself to his hobbies, his studies, and has no time for other work. Likewise, when we engage in wholesome work, sin naturally goes away.
One day, Martin Luther, the Reformer, was having breakfast. The dog sitting next to his chair was looking intently at Luther as he ate. When Luther's hand went to the bowl, the dog's eyes went to the bowl, and when Luther's hand went to the mouth, the dog's eyes went to the mouth. As Luther moved, the dog's eyes followed. Luther saw this and was moved by the dog. So Luther threw a piece of meat at the dog. The dog frantically devoured it, then opened his eyes again and looked at Luther. Then Luther realized one thing. “If I had only looked at God as a dog looked at my hand, God would have been more impressed with me.”
Ladies and gentlemen, we can shun sin if we throw away all mundane things and focus on wholesome things and things God wants. Be born in this world and go crazy about evangelism. Go crazy with Bible reading. Go crazy with prayer. Go crazy for service to the Lord. Go crazy for worship. This is the secret to overcoming sin.
2. You just need to repent.
Everyone, it is a person who falls and falls over and over again. But God is not far from us because we have fallen again and have sinned. God is well aware that we will continue to sin as long as we live in this world in the flesh. However, if we do not hide or acknowledge our sins, God hates them. The Bible says how much you hate it. “Unless a man repents, his sword is gone, and his bow has already been drawn and prepared” (Psalm 7:12).
Ladies and gentlemen, when we repent and repent, God forgives and forgives. Then how many times will you forgive me until I repent? Will God forgive me even if I repent for the same sin 100 times or 200 times? The answer lies in the Bible. Once Peter asked Jesus. “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother if he sins against me? up to seven times?” (Matthew 18:21)
Then Jesus answered. “Not only seven times, but seventy times seven times.” If you multiply seventy times seven, you get 490, does that mean you only have to forgive 490 times? It's not like that. The number 7 in the Bible symbolizes the eternal number. That is, to forgive infinitely. The Lord, who told us to be brave like this, will not forgive us infinitely.
Gentlemen, we also sin in this foreign land. Maybe because he is a foreigner, he may commit more sins. But every time we sin, we must turn to God and repent. Even if you keep sinning over and over, the conclusion of your sin must be repentance. If you repent like that over and over again, there will always be an end. Sin is not the problem, repentance is the problem. Do not lose heart every time you commit a sin. If you repent, eventually sin will not prevail, but repentance will prevail. Therefore, even if you sin, you must repent and live and go to heaven.
3. You can receive the Holy Spirit.
The greatest secret to overcoming sin is also to receive the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit comes into our hearts as the Spirit of Jesus, or the Spirit of God, and helps us to live a holy life in this world. Therefore, after Jesus was resurrected, he said to his disciples, “Receive the Holy Spirit” (John 20:22). Also, the Bible says: “Walk by the Spirit, and you will not fulfill the lust of the flesh” (Galatians 5:17).
In the last days, the power of sin is so strong that God knows that we will not be able to overcome sin through our human resolution, personality, and cultivating the way, and He promised to pour out the Holy Spirit to help us overcome sin. And He promises to set us free from the shame, condemnation, and destructive things that come because of sin. Regarding this, the Bible says: “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, for the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and death” (Romans 8:1-2).
Let me conclude. Sin keeps us from reaching the glory of God. Sin destroys even the Garden of Eden. The greatest enemy that hinders my success and happiness is sin. Therefore, we must abstain from sin. We must overcome sin. I pray that you will be freed from sin and overcome sin because it extends to wholesome work and the work of God, and through repentance and being filled with the Holy Spirit. And I pray that you will follow the glory of God, who is your duty, even in this foreign land.
