The Chinese character for thanks (感謝) refers to a person who has a sense of feeling and a person to give thanks. The English word “thanks” comes from the idea of thinking. The Greek word for thanks in this verse is eujcaristevw, which means to give thanks, to express gratitude, to give thanks.
God commanded Israel to give thanks during the three festivals of the year (Ex 23:14-17; Leviticus 23:4-8,15-21,34-43).
Deuteronomy 16:16 “Every male among you shall appear to the Lord on the third day of the year, on the Feast of Unleavened Bread, on the Feast of Weeks, and on the Feast of Tabernacles, in the place chosen by the Lord your God;
17 Let each one give according to his strength, according to the blessing of the LORD your God.”
The Feast of Unleavened Bread is the Passover, a festival to commemorate the liberation from Egypt.
The Feast of Weeks is the Feast of Harvest, in which the grain obtained after entering the land of Canaan is offered on the Feast of Pentecost.
The Feast of Tabernacles, also called the Feast of Tabernacles or the Feast of Ingathering, is a season to give thanks for the autumn harvest in October and putting it into storage.
The Feast of Tabernacles is the biblical origin of the Thanksgiving Festival of Harvest.
Exodus 23:16 “Keep the Feast of Harvest, for you reap the firstfruits of what you sowed in the field. Keep the Feast of Ingathering, because at the end of the year you gather and store what you have toiled from the field.”
In 1620, the Puritans (Protestants) who were persecuted in England and headed to the United States on the Maitlauer arrived to farm and give thanks. In 1941, the United States Congress even designated the fourth Saturday in November as Pursuit Day. .
Korea’s Thanksgiving Day began in 1904 when the Presbyterian Church celebrated November 10 as Thanksgiving Day, and in 1914, after a meeting of each denomination, it was celebrated on the third Wednesday of November, the day when an American missionary first entered Korea. We set a day of thanksgiving and worship, and then change Wednesday to Sunday, and now the third Sunday in November is observed as Thanksgiving Day.
Today, we would like to learn the spiritual lesson the Bible wants to give on the subject of gratitude.
1. Gratitude for Salvation is Unchanging
Verse 18 says, “In everything give thanks.” It means to be grateful for the whole of life. Among them, we should be thankful for the Savior, and this gratitude should be the basis of all thanks.
Just as Israel is most importantly grateful for being saved from Egypt and offering it as a great feast, the people of salvation who became Christians must learn to give thanks for being rescued by being taken out of a world like Egypt for the rest of their lives.
2 Thessalonians 2:13 “We ought always to give thanks to God for you, brothers loved by the Lord, because God chose you from the beginning for salvation through sanctification by the Holy Spirit and faith in the truth.”
Only when we can properly thank the God of salvation will we have the strength to overcome the harsh world. A Christian's view of history is not the kind of gratitude that the world thinks, it is conditional and sensitive to cultural and environmental factors. Even if there are difficulties, it is to give thanks to the God of salvation. Because they have been moved from hell to heaven.
Hab 3:17 “Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, though
18 I will rejoice in the LORD; I will rejoice in the God of my salvation.”
The material and time that Israel gives thanks to God and offers sacrifices is great. They offer a total of 189 sacrifices per year (Numbers 29:12-34), and devote a total of 171 days to God for giving thanks and offering sacrifices. The important thing is that such a life of spirit is the fact that the richest people in the world today are Jewish.
A person should not become rich just by sweating, but should be able to receive the grace of God. Amidst miracles and grace, we must obtain the fruits of our efforts in order to bear much fruit.
The Lord said to His disciples about a woman who broke the alabaster and washed the Lord's feet.
Luke 7:47 “Therefore I say to you, their many sins are forgiven, for they love much, and he who is forgiven little loves little.”
As the same sinner, the degree to which we receive salvation by the grace of the same blood of Jesus and cause a reaction is different. It will depend on how much you are impressed with the content of salvation, and it will not be a difference in personality and emotions.
I saved someone who was going to die because I didn't have any emotions, so would you stay still? Can emotions change situations? It can't be.
2. Be grateful for guiding your life in all things
This kind of gratitude is up to you to think, but it is very good to live with a grateful spirit. Even in the same situation, if you think that you are living on your own strength, it will be enough, but if you think that you are living by the grace of God and know how to be thankful, you can get more grace in everything.
Psalm 116:12 “With what shall I repay all the favors the Lord has given me?”
Being able to move and work with your hands is something to be grateful for compared to those who can't. When you go to the hospital, you are grateful that you are moving well. Thank you for talking and running. Thank you for singing and applauding.
When I see prisoners, I am grateful to be living in a free body.
The ancient Greek philosopher Plato gave thanks for four things.
The first is to be born as a human
The second is to be born in Greece, the city of philosophy.
Third, I met a teacher like Socrates.
Fourth, I was grateful to be born as a man.
In fact, the fundamental reason that Christians say thank you in everything is that, after gaining the experience of salvation, they have a feeling of gratitude that they are contented and grateful rather than lacking in anything. There is a separate thanksgiving for salvation, and there is no such thing as an obligation to give thanks in everything.
Human nature is greedy, so even if we have more, we always have more dissatisfaction than gratitude.
The stress of modern people is not a lack, but a thirst for desire that is caused by excessive greed. It can be healed with a grateful heart.
1 Timothy 6:8 “If we have food and clothing, we will be content with that.”
However, for the witness of the Lord's gospel, there are many materials and other necessary things. You have to work for it and you have to make it happen. Therefore, gratitude in everything is the basis of strength and effort. It's not negligence or that this is enough, it's that the emotion of every challenge begins with gratitude.
Philippians 4:6 “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.”
## Beggar under the bridge When a local fire breaks out, how miserable would it be if the beggar's son said, 'Father, we don't have a house, so it's good because we don't have a fire'? It's on a different level than being grateful. It is the voice of a person who does not know responsibility for culture. It is the voice of one without a vision.
Christians must strive, sweat, and work to devote themselves to life. Nevertheless, we must overcome difficulties with gratitude in everything.
This chapter teaches the Thessalonians to win in all things with thanksgiving, encouraging them to always be nervous, pray, and watch, because they had a controversy about the time of the Second Coming of the Lord.
These words were given to us who are living in the last days today with the hope that we will be able to overcome them with thanksgiving in all things despite the tribulations and difficulties.
Philippians 4:12 “I know how to be in need, and I know how to abound. I have learned the secret of being satisfied in all things, in spite of hunger, abundance and want.
13 I can do all things through him who strengthens me.”
3. Gratitude is God's Will for Ourselves
18 “In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”
Among the will of God given to us who have been saved in Jesus and have changed our view of history in Jesus to know the afterlife and God’s economy to lead the global village, it is the fact that God’s will is the spirit of being born and saved and giving thanks in Christ is also God’s will. .
The important thing is that the word is meant for us.
When we ask God to give thanks, we do not mean that we are forcing God to do it for God, but we do it for ourselves. This is an important statement.
Gratitude means that God's will for our own souls and life to be prosperous, that is, the way to a good and blessed life.
You have to live by saying blessings for your neighbors, but if you know that, praying for peace and happiness to your neighbors will eventually lead to your own success.
Matthew 10:12 “And as you enter that house, pray for peace.
13 If the house is worthy of it, there will be your empty peace; if it is not worthy, your peace will come to you.”
Gratitude is also God's will for us and for us. This is God's blessed will for us to do well before we do it for God.
We are living in the era of the greatest materialism since the founding of the Joseon Dynasty. No, the world is now living in the best scientific culture and material age. In the midst of this, they value money like a god, and their soul is being destroyed.
Hebrews 13:5 Remembering the Lord's words, "Do not love money, but be content with what you have, for he himself said, 'I will not leave you, nor will I ever leave you.'" When the heart overflows with gratitude in all things based on the grace of salvation and knowledge, there will be no stress of comparison, but rather an opportunity to make life more enjoyable and richer.
Knowing that living as a grateful person rather than a dissatisfied person is the secret to victory, I wish you and I to live with a bright face, a self-sufficient face, a happy working face, and a wonderful face running towards the vision with gratitude while giving thanks in everything.
