He is the God of the covenant.
Contents Saints who serve the God of the covenant! The Hebrew word for covenant is berit. Essentially, a covenant is a binding promise (a contract) between two parties to do something for each other. But in the case of God's covenant with His people, the one-way character of the covenant is even more striking. Genesis 3:15 is the covenant of grace called the “primitive gospel.” Psalm 89 is a psalm that cries out based on God's covenants and promises. This covenant of grace was also given to Noah (Gen. 9:) and Abraham (Gen. 12:).
First, the poet sings of the majesty of God (Psalm 89:5-18).
God rules over all things in heaven and on earth (Psalm 89:5). The heavens are yours, and the earth is yours (Psalm 89:11). All true moral laws are based on the character of God. “The air of righteousness is the foundation of your throne” (Psalm 89:14). Also, God is worshiped by his people (Psalm 89:15). He has set up kings in each nation (Psalm 89:17).
Second, the poet wrote about David and his descendants, the lineage of the promise (covenant).
God appointed David as his servant (Psalm 89:19,20). God established a covenant with David (Psalm 89:28). David's line was promised to be as strong as the sun and the moon forever (Psalm 89:36,37). The line of David was preserved for the coming of the great Davidic descendant, the advent of Jesus Christ.
Dear saint! God is merciful and faithful. This is evident in God's covenant and its fulfillment. Therefore, the psalmist repeatedly sings of God's mercy and faithfulness (Psalm 89:1,2,5,8,24,28,33). The psalmist pleads on the basis of this covenant (Psalm 89:38-51). Therefore, let us trust in the mercy and faithfulness of God. -Amen-
Our Lord Jesus Christ! I want to realize the immutability (Numbers 18:19), permanence (1 Chronicles 16:15), and holiness (Luke 1:72) of the Lord's covenant.
