Sermons for Preaching

Isn't the title a contradiction? / Luke 1:26-35

The incarnation of Christ seems impossible to explain rationally and logically. How can a virgin have children? Not only miracles like the virgin birth, but in fact his entire life seems contradictory. The redemptive work of his birth and growth, suffering and glorification clearly seems contradictory.

I. An impossible birth

It is a contradiction that Almighty God became a weak human being that can be seen, taken by the hand, and crucified to death. So the Greeks who advocated dualism said that Jesus was just a man, not God. In fact, with common sense, how would it be possible for a woman to conceive alone without a man? His birth seems contradictory.

II. An impossible life

Isn't it a contradiction that one who performed miracles for others, and even for nature, died on the cross in weakness? If He was the true God and Savior, why did He have to die? Resurrection after death seems like a contradiction of contradictions. Why did the Lord have to die again that it was true? And did he have to ascend to heaven after being resurrected? His life is certainly consistent with seemingly contradictory events.

. But it's not contradictory at all (Not absurd at all)

From a human point of view, his birth and life are full of contradictions. But the Bible testifies that his life was not at all contradictory. Medieval theologian Anselm of Canterbury wrote, 'Cur Deus Homo?' (Why God-Man? Why Did God Become Man?). He referred to the incarnation event as the wisdom of Almighty God rather than a contradiction.

God created man to have fellowship with Himself. However, after Adam, man left God and was placed under judgment. Humans did not have the qualifications or ability to be saved on their own, so someone had to pay the price for their sins, and only God could accomplish this. God's answer to man's sin, that is the event of Christ's incarnation. The incarnation is the payment of God's sin in Christ.

IV. the God of miracles

Today's materialists only talk about a world that can be seen, touched, and measured. But the Bible tells us that there are more important things that cannot be seen. The Bible emphasizes that there are spiritual and supernatural realms. The Bible speaks of the supernatural forgiveness and salvation that God accomplished through the coming of the Messiah into the human world. God accomplished a supernatural miracle through the incarnation event.

concluding remarks

Have you ever thought of love as a contradiction? There are contradictions in love that logical words cannot explain. Only love knows why there is no choice but to love. If we ask, 'Why did God come to us?', God will say, 'I did it because I love you.' ‘Why must God save us?’ It is not easy to find a human answer to this question. In fact, isn't the fact that the exalted God came to the sinful human world itself a contradiction? The answer to the incarnation of God is surprisingly simple. It is because God loved us. We love because he first loved us. Because God loved us, we too must love God and love others who cannot be loved.
