Text: Genesis 36:1-43
Key Verse: (Genesis 36:31) These were the kings who ruled over the land of Edom before there was a king who ruled over the children of Israel.
Esau shows a much better humanity than Jacob. And as the ancestor of the Edomites, he was living his life enjoying the same position as a king. He conquered and took possession of the supreme lands, and his life does not come with difficult records.
1. His Blessing
He had no difficulty in pilgrimage. There was no famine, no going down to Egypt, no 40 years of living in the desert, no anxiety during the time of the judges. Excluded from all this, he had to celebrate and rejoice himself. But he had no visions of God, no fellowship with Jehovah, no contact with angels. While walking the path of true solitude where you must enjoy a life cut off from God, you were only satisfied with your physical condition.
2. His pleasure.
His life was dignified as a chieftain like a king, a line of subjects, a fertile land, and peace and comfort. Long before the first king came to Israel, he was already a king. He was like the man of this world depicted in the psalms, whose portion was this life, and he was full of treasures. But Esau was never awake and satisfied with the image of God, nor did he enjoy the blessings of “the house of God.”
3. His way of life.
He was generous, good-natured, rejoicing and willing to give. The land was too small for Jacob and himself to dwell in, so he left and settled at the foot of Mount Seir.
“(Mal 1:2) “I have loved you, says the Lord, but you say, ‘How has the Lord loved us? (3) Esau hated and made his mountains desolate, and gave his inheritance to the wilderness of the wilderness.”
It was not difficult for him to leave the Promised Land. Perhaps most of them preferred Esau over Jacob, but God did not. The cool human figure is enough to buy us human affection. However, God eventually chose Jacob, who was lacking and had faults, and led him.
4. Why is this brother's fate different?
One lived for this world, and the other went on a pilgrimage to the city of God as a citizen of the heavenly city of Jerusalem. One person is an ordinary person in this world, and the other person became a channel of God's grace toward mankind by God's choice.
(Amos 3:3) How can two walk together unless they agree?
apply.
1) Why did God finally choose and use Jacob, who was more troublesome than Esau, who possessed a refreshing personality?
2) What was the biggest pitfall in Esau's life, who seemed to be unaware of suffering on the path of the carnal life?
3) What do you think is the purpose of life that a person should truly pursue when he comes to this earth?
