Sermon on Thanksgiving Day (2006. 11.19)
A stranger's thanks
Luke 17:12-19
What has happened to you recently that you are most grateful for? What is the title of your life that you are most grateful for?
We celebrated Thanksgiving Day. On Thanksgiving Day, think about the spirit of gratitude. To whom will we be thankful for gratitude? What will you be grateful for? Think about how you should express your gratitude.
Jesus passed between Samaria and Galilee. You entered a village and there was a crowd who wanted to meet Jesus the most. They were lepers. These lepers had heard about Jesus. They were waiting on the road to meet Jesus. I couldn't be in the crowd because I was isolated from society. They stood in the way Jesus was passing and called out to him aloud, “Have mercy on us,” a desperate cry.
Jesus heard the voice. “Go and show yourselves to the priests.” Since you are healed, go and get a sure eye stamp from the priest, confirm that you are healed, and receive a declaration that you can start a social life. Then 10 people went to Ururu. On the way, a leper came back to Jesus. And they glorified God and gave thanks to Jesus.
The action of this healed leper moved Jesus. “Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the nine? Has no one returned to glorify God except these Gentiles?” .
what do you mean? Where did the other nine who had to come to express their gratitude to me went?
What can we learn from this story? People seek God when they need it, but when their need is met, they put God down as if they had always been there. This is characteristic of modern people. Dietrich Bonhoeffer called this cheap grace.
Would you like to do the same?
I saw ten Gentile lepers being healed. Healing from leprosy is a miracle of miracles. So how happy are you?
Jesus asked his disciples as if he were self-righteous. Has no one returned to glorify God except this Gentile? The lepers were cleansed on the way. But the nine must have rushed to the priest to show themselves clean. But one Gentile came to Jesus and expressed his gratitude. This stranger knew what to really thank Gu.
conclusion
We live in an age where gratitude is lost. Paul said in 1 Timothy that one of the hallmarks of the end times was being ungrateful. Gratitude must be restored. We must restore the thrill of salvation. Learn from the gratitude of the dumb leper.
