Text: Proverbs 17:9
“He who covers a transgression seeks love, and he who repeats it separates close friends.”
A painter was asked for a portrait of Alexander the Great and was troubled. Because there was an ugly scar on the great king's forehead. The painter did not want to put the wounds of the great king on the canvas. Because the great king did not want to damage his pride. But if the wound is not painted, the portrait will not be genuine, and the artist's trust will fall to the ground. The painter thought of one way. I thought I should draw a picture of the great king resting with his hand on his forehead.
Have you seen the wounds of others? Then you need to figure out how to cover it up. It is said that love covers a multitude of faults.
In Genesis 9, the three sons react to the drunken Noah's transgression. Ham saw his father's shameful sight and revealed it. But Shem and Japheth covered their father's shame. As a result, Ham's son who did not cover his father lost his blessing, and Shem, who did not cover his father, became descendants who are called the Gods of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and Japheth became prosperous. Blessed is the one who covers and the one who covers is blessed. It was also a blessing to cover the person closest to me, my father. The best way for me is to cover others. Be a blessed person who reveals things to be grateful for and hides things to be ashamed of.
'Therefore, as God's chosen, holy and beloved ones, clothe yourself with mercy, mercy, humility, gentleness, and long-suffering; forgiving one another and forgiving one another against anyone against whom the Lord has forgiven you, and you also Add love above things, which is the perfect bond' (Colossians 3:12-14).
No human can see my face. But I can see other people's faces well. So we don't see our own faults well, but we see the faults of others.
Therefore, it seems that the saying, “Everyone lives for that good-natured fun” was coined. There is also a story that says, “Even hedgehogs think that their young are very smooth.” In other words, it is easy for us humans to point out only the faults of others without knowing our own faults. All kinds of grievances and strife arise here, and society also becomes unstable. Jesus also said:
“Why do you see the speck in your brother’s eye, but not the log that is in your own eye? Take the log out of it, and then you will see clearly and remove the speck from your brother’s eye” (Matthew 7:3-5).
When we look at the various complaints and disputes that occur in our society, we often feel that it is not happening because we are trying to remove the specks in the eyes of others without seeing the beam in our own eyes.
There are many times when it is thought that this is not the case between political parties, between labor and management, or between social classes.
We each need to see my face. You need to look in the mirror often. This is called self-reflection.
Believers need to read the Bible more often. The Bible is like a mirror, showing our faults. You should listen to the advice of your close friends.
“Who is it that can understand his transgression, and set me free from hidden transgression” (Psalm 19:12).
We need these prayers too.
The Bible also says:
“Hate stirs up strife, but love covers all transgressions” (Proverbs 10:12).
Let us love our neighbor and brother. Love covers the faults of a brother and does not do evil to a neighbor. Therefore, love is the fulfillment of the law (Romans 13:10).
“Remember that you should not slander anyone, do not quarrel, be tolerant, and show gentleness to all people in all things” (Titus 3:2).
A Christian should always examine himself in the Word of God while checking whether his relationship with God is right. Then we can love our neighbors and make our lives sanctified. I pray that we can become Christians who do not criticize others, cover their faults, and love their neighbors.
