“But do not forget to do good and to share with one another, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.”
Dr. Alfred Adler, an Austrian psychologist, tells a depressed patient who came to him:
"If you follow my prescription for just two weeks, you can become healthy. The prescription is not too difficult. You just need to figure out how to please others every day and put it into practice."
Many patients who came expecting expensive drugs or difficult prescriptions, most of them must have returned with great disappointment at this bland prescription. But for those who followed his prescription, special effects appeared immediately. They confess that their depression is gone by helping others and spreading love to neighbors in need. Blow a boomerang of love towards the world. Unimaginable joy will return to your heart.
“Give, and it will be given to you; and it will be given to you, pressed down, shaken, and overflowing, and given to you” (Luke 6:38).
Life reaps what you sow. A disciple asked the wise man, his teacher, "Why can't I have joy? Why can't other people give me happiness?" said the sage.
“How can you bring a bowl of rice for one pound of rice? Can you tell me to take a piece of fabric and go to a clothes making house and make one for you? Can you expect joy in everything you do with a frown on your face? How can you think that other people will give you happiness without being a friendly neighbor and a giver?”
“Blessed is the one who has good eyes, for he gives food to the poor” (Proverbs 22:9).
Human happiness and joy come first from meeting and second from sharing. That is why it is often said that 'life is sharing'.
In today's sermon, he says, 'Don't forget to share with each other'. Don't forget to share what you have with others. This means sharing not only material things, but also sorrows, pains, and joys. 'Rejoice with those who rejoice, and "weep" with those who weep. It is to share food with the hungry and drink with the thirsty. It is said to come close to the sick and fall, and bind them up, sharing the oil and wine. In other words, share time, share love, share risk. And he says that this act of sharing with one another becomes a sacrifice that is pleasing to God. Happiness is paradoxical. Happiness is not about having, it is about giving. When you dedicate yourself to the happiness of others rather than pursuing your own happiness, you will enjoy abundant happiness.
The reason the name of Jesus is honored in all the earth is because Jesus did not live for Him. Because he gave everything he had to serve. Human happiness consists in sharing and giving, and the way to enrich our happiness lies in giving. Life is enriched by sharing. This is the mystery of God's love. May this precious blessing be with you in the new year.
* Prayer: God, Lord of all things in the world! How many times have I been bluffed and arrogant as if everything I had was mine? God, allow me to confess every day that everything, including myself, belongs to God and offer it to me. Help me to always think of my neighbors and live for others. Help us to share our heart's wealth with those in need. Let us live our lives with the belief that God cares for us. We pray in the name of our Savior Jesus. Amen.
