Title: Reasons for losing a fight
Bible: Obadiah 1:7-9
This time we look at the sermon under the title of “The Reason for Losing the Fight”.
If you look at the text,
“In that day, saith the Lord, will I not destroy the wise from Edom, and the sensible from the mountain of Esau?
I did.
This is the prophet's prophecy that Edom, which torments Israel, will be annihilated by God's judgment.
God says that He will treat His people harshly and destroy those who oppose them.
Edom, who appears in the main story, did not depend on God, but on the people of the world who had no power to help.
However, the nations of the world not only had no power to help Edom, but rather became Edom's enemies and took the lead in destroying Edom.
Still, Edom did not realize it.
I didn't even have the ability to deal with it.
If we look at verse 7,
“For there is no understanding in your heart.”
When the enemy attacks, you have to deal with it wisely, but Edom was not.
Also, looking at the words of verse 8, the reason is explained to us.
“In that day, saith the LORD, will I not destroy the wise from Edom, and the sensible from the mountain of Esau?”
Because God destroys all the wise and sensible people of Edom, Edom's heart cannot but understand.
Bonsi Edom was a country with a lot of exchanges with many countries around the world.
It was called the King's Highway, and at that time highways stretched out in all directions with Edom as its center.
Through this road, Edom was able to absorb all the cultures of the countries of the world.
So the wisdom of Edom was great.
Eliphaz in the book of Job was a Temanite.
That alone is the name of a city in Edom.
According to the book of Job, although Eliphaz gave wrong advice, we do not know how rich his speech or content is.
In this way, the wisdom of Edom has been famous since ancient times.
But in that day when God judges, "the wise will be destroyed from Edom, and the sensible will be destroyed from the mountain of Esau."
God destroys the wise, so even when enemies attack Edom, they do not know how to strategize, how to plan, or how to respond.
If we look at the words of verse 9,
“Teman, your warriors will be astonished, and all who are on the mountain of Esau will be put to death and annihilated.”
I did.
Deman is a province of Edom.
According to Genesis 36:15,
“These are the chiefs of the descendants of Esau. Of the descendants of Eliphaz the firstborn of Esau, chief Teman, chief Omar, chief Zebo, chief Kenaz.”
Esau's eldest son's name is Eliphaz.
He shares the same name with Job's friend Eliphaz.
Teman was the son of Eliphaz.
So Teman is the grandson of Esau.
The city was named after Esau's grandson.
But, God says, “Your warriors will be amazed.”
He said that all the warriors fighting would be surprised.
Because all the leaders have been destroyed.
Moreover, they are amazed because God has created fear in their hearts and in the hearts of the fighting warriors of Edom.
In order to win the battle, the general must first prevail.
Also, the warriors must go forth and fight with strength.
However, the wise will disappear, and the warriors cannot fight properly because God gives them a fearful heart.
So what is the result?
“For this reason all who are on the mountain of Esau will be put to death and annihilated.”
You have no choice but to lose the fight.
It is said that when the battle is defeated and annihilated, not only one tenth is destroyed, but “all” of them.
It explains how thorough God's judgment is.
It is said that “all” will be judged without leaving any one behind.
War belongs to the Lord.
According to 1 Samuel 17:47,
“And I will let this crowd know that the LORD saves not with sword and spear, for the battle belongs to the LORD, and he will deliver you into our hands.”
I did.
So, it is up to God to win or lose the war.
Not just war, but also the business front.
Whether I win or lose doesn't depend on how many troops I have and how many weapons I have.
Whether you win or lose depends on how well you have a right relationship with God.
If you think about David and Goliath, it doesn't become a game.
But when God was on David's side and with David, David defeated Goliath in an instant.
No matter how strong the walls of Jericho are, when God is with the people of Israel, the walls of Jericho will fall.
The small city of Ai, even though it is a small city, had no choice but to be defeated when the Israelites did not have a proper relationship with God.
Edom relied on the nations of the world, but to no avail.
When we depend on God and trust Him, we can win all battles.
If we look at the words of 2 Chronicles 20:1,
“After that the children of Moab and the children of Ammon came with some Maonites to attack Jehoshaphat.”
Allied forces attack Jehoshaphat.
But looking at verse 12,
“O our God, do you not punish them? We have no power against this great crowd that comes against us, and we do not know what to do, but we look to you.”
I did.
There will be many instances where we too will face this situation.
There are times when you will be beaten up by enemies from all sides.
When we can't handle it on our own, we have no choice but to pray like Jehoshaphat. “God, I can’t handle it in my own strength. I don't know what to do. I look to the Lord. Please help me.”
If we look at the words of verse 20 with this feeling of Jehoshaphat,
“Then the people got up early and went out into the field of Tekoa. As they were going out, Jehoshaphat stood and said, Hear me, you inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem; trust in the Lord your God, and you will be established; trust in the prophet, and you will prosper. and."
I say.
Jehoshaphat calls the generals who go to war to trust in the Lord God.
He told them not to hold onto the ropes of the world and trust in the Lord God.
The result is recorded in verse 24.
“When the men of Judah came to the tower in the field, they saw the crowd, and found only corpses lying on the ground, and no one escaped.”
Judah won this battle.
Jehoshaphat did not win on his own.
This is what God has done when we trust in God and look only to the Lord.
Please read 2 Chronicles 20 carefully and meditate on it by taking the position of Jehoshaphat when you are suffering and struggling.
God's comfort will abound.
Conversely, when you feel like sleeping on your own and relying on what you have, put yourself in the position of Moab and Ammon who invaded Judah and think about it.
The Moabites relied on their troops and weapons to attack helpless Judah, but they were defeated.
If you think about it, your desire to be elevated will disappear.
Organize your words.
Today's verse clearly shows why we fail in the spiritual battle.
It is a big mistake to try to overcome anything with our own strength.
If we depend on me and the world, God will put me in other hands. On the other hand, if we trust and depend on God, He will help us so that we can live a victorious life.
Through today's Word, I pray in the name of the Lord that all of our saints will live a victorious life with God's help every day.
