<Today's Word>
12:20 And Herod was very angry with the people of Tire and Sidon, and because they ate the food of the kingdom, they came to him with one heart and persuaded Blastus, the servant of the king's bed, to be reconciled.
12:21 Herod chose a day, put on his robe, and sat on the altar, speaking to the people.
12:22 And the people cried out aloud, saying, This is the voice of a god, not of a man.
12:23 Because Herod did not give glory to God, an angel of the Lord struck him immediately, and he was eaten by worms and died.
12:24 The word of God multiplied and multiplied.
12:25 After Barnabas and Saul had finished helping, they returned from Jerusalem with John, who was also called Mark.
13:1 There were prophets and teachers in the church of Antioch: Barnabas, Simeon who was called Niger, Lucius the Cyreneite, Manaen the younger brother of Herod the tetrarch, and Saul.
13:2 While serving the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, "Set aside Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called you."
13:3 And they fasted and prayed, and laid their hands on them, and sent them away.
The story of the primitive tribes introduced in the documentary program, Tears of the Amazon, makes you think about many things. Uncontrolled human selfishness eventually led to reckless development, which resulted in primitive tribes losing their families and communities to become urban poor. I think about the meaning of the tears that are shed in the shadows of civilization that are cut as thickly as the splendor in front of the fact that too glamorous cities can make life more easily corrupted.
◆ Life eaten by insects
Herod was a man of extraordinary political power, who could read the prevailing circumstances and use the needs of the people appropriately. So Herod chooses an appropriate day, wears a flashing robe, and communicates effectively. The effect was perfect for the excellent directing. However, the Bible introduces his last life as being eaten by worms. It was the insignificant worm that brought down Herod, who was so splendid and detailed.
◆ A life that thrives and grows
The text introduces the fact that, unlike a life eaten by insects, there is a history of increasing and revitalizing every day. Obviously, if there is a dawn in our lives, it is natural that there will be a decline period. But God is the same yesterday and today. Moreover, the Lord is always the One who renews us. If the Lord does, even at a feast where the wine runs out, we can taste better than before. Remember. Don't feel sorry for the past, just look at the possibilities that remain. Our heyday has not yet arrived.
◆ Reasons to set up separately
There were new leaders in the Antioch Church. Even people from different cultures and backgrounds had no problem becoming one in Christ. A healthy community transcends those differences. Because it was a community of service. Because it was a praying community. The church in Antioch, where they fasted and prayed, was not eaten by insects. Because I knew it would be separate. Even the Antioch Church was able to send out their best leadership. What will we set apart for the Lord this year?
