Review: Summary of Genesis 35 / He Lived! => He died! => He's back!
Death of Rebekah's nurse, Deborah.
Death of Jacob's beloved wife Rachel.
Isaac's death.
Everyone is going the way they should go.
Now, it is important how we are evaluated when we go before God.
Have you lived a life that pleases God?
Am I doing what I ought to be doing?
Have you lived a life without regrets?
Have you lived a life you miss for others?
Did you live a life of faith without shame in the presence of God or the forefathers of faith?
Remember that although Deborah, the nameless nanny, lived a life that made others weep and cry.
<The genealogy of Esau>
1. Esau, that is, about Edom (v. 1)
<KJV> 36:1 This is the outline of Edom.
/ Edom means red, and Esau is said to be Edom because he later became the ancestor of the Edomites.
The reason that Esau's genealogy was recorded before Jacob's is that the Jacob's genealogy continues under the intervention of God in redemptive history, but Esau's genealogy has now ended its role.
And the recorded part is mainly written because it appeals to the part related to Jacob's family and the chosen people. In God's history, Esau's lineage plays only an auxiliary role. It was a well-known genealogy in the world, but in God's work, it is just a family line that is disappearing.
Ex) Our family line should not become a forgotten family before God like Esau.
2. Esau had three wives (verses 2, 3).
<KJV> 36:2 Of the Canaanite women, Esau took Adah the daughter of Elon of the Hittites, and Oholibamah the son of Ana the daughter of Zibeon of the Hivites, as their wives.
King James Version 36:3 And he took Ishmael's daughter, Nebaioth's sister, Basmath.
/ And all three of them were from Canaanite women. These wives probably helped establish Esau's position in the land of Canaan.
However, the Bible always warns against having multiple wives and has bad results.
Ex) Jacob's wives..., Solomon's wives..., Lamech's wives from Cain's descendants..., David's wives...
However, Abraham, Isaac, or Noah... have always had a strong family with one wife. And he had a smooth life and blessings.
Also, the woman of the land of Canaan does not know to fear God, so she always prevents the blessing of God from coming to her father-in-law's house.
So, when Abraham sought self-confidence, he told him to go to his homeland and seek self-respect among the women of faith. A woman of faith A husband who welcomes a woman who prays as his wife has caught on, and a family that welcomes such a woman with pride receives a lot of blessings. Also, therefore, a woman who has received a husband of faith should sing hymn 28, “The Source of Blessing Has Descent...” in front of her husband.
3. The children of that time are like verses 4,5.
King James Version 36:4 Adah fathered Eliphaz to Esau, and Basmath fathered Reuel.
<KJV> 36:5 Oholibamah fathered Jeux, and Jalam, and Korah, the sons of Esau, who begotten to him in the land of Canaan.
4. Esau leaves Jacob (vv. 6, 7)
[KJV] 36:6 Esau left his brother Jacob and went to another place with his wives and his children, and all the men of his household, and his livestock, and all his livestock, and all that he had acquired in the land of Canaan.
[KJV] 36:7 Because the possessions of the two were so great that they could not dwell together, the land where they sojourned could not tolerate them because of their livestock.
Jacob and Esau were separated because of their property. Compared to the pastureland, the two men had too much wealth.
Those who inherit the heritage of faith from their parents receive abundant material blessings despite their status as strangers. I see material blessings for children of faithful parents, as long as they don't really do anything wrong... It is to bless the children according to the hard work and devotion of the parents. Of course, there are exceptions in some cases. This is when God's more special will is for them.
Thus, quite naturally, Esau leaves Jacob and goes to Mount Seir. This is to prevent Esau, who is strong, from taking over the Promised Land, and Esau turned away from each other so that the issue of inheritance in the land of Canaan would not become a quarrel with each other. Thus, sovereignty over the Promised Land of Canaan was given to the descendants of Jacob without much resistance.
God not only guides the steps of His promised people, but also arranges the surroundings so that His people may inherit His inheritance. Those who will turn will make them turn, and those who will dwell will make them dwell.
Ex) The relationship between the church and the tenants of this building is also entrusted to God.
Therefore, the apparent reason Esau left Jacob and went to Seir was to seek pastures, but in reality, God's providence had already been fulfilled through Isaac. A man plans his way in his heart, but God directs his steps.
Proverbs 16:9 A man's heart plans his way, but the LORD directs his steps.
Therefore, entrusting our life path to God who guides our path is the wisest and most blessed way to live.
5. The difference between habitual land and inhabited land. (Verses 7, 8)
[KJV] 36:7 Because the possessions of the two were so great that they could not dwell together, the land where they sojourned could not tolerate them because of their livestock.
King James Version 36:8 And Esau, that is, Edom, dwelt on Mount Seir.
Interestingly, the land of Canaan, where Jacob lived, was a sojourn. In other words, it is expressed as a land for a short stay, and Mount Seir, where Esau lived after leaving Jacob, is expressed as inhabiting (yashabu/living, lying down), and is described as completely settled.
This shows that even if it is called the promised land to the saints, in the world it is only a temporary place to stay, the world is a stranger's world, and the real home is the eternal heaven.
But for the worldly people, this world will be the last land they can inhabit. That is why people who do not have God cling to the things of this earth, use the things of this earth as their purpose in life, set the standard for their judgment, and struggle at night to get things on earth... It's trying hard to stay forever.
Ex) The first castle of mankind was the castle of ‘Enoch’ that Cain built.
However, the Bible warns that those who are bound by things of the earth for their only purpose and strive to expand their power by building them with all their might, will remain woeful.
Isaiah 5:8 Woe to those who build houses from house to house, who add land to land so that there are no voids, and who seek to dwell alone in the midst of the land
Our hope is in heaven, our citizenship is in heaven, and our treasures must be laid up in heaven to become truly mine. Hallelujah!
Philippians 3:20 But our citizenship is in heaven, from which we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.
Matthew 6:19 Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and rust breaks through and steals.
Matthew 6:20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroy, and where thieves do not break through and steal.
6. Names of Esau's descendants (verses 9-30)
A characteristic feature of their names is the fact that almost no achievements are recorded, just their names. This does not mean that they have done nothing in the world, but rather that what they have done has no record in the eyes of God.
Only the story of the discovery of the hot springs is recorded, and only that Amalek, who tormented Israel, was born from among the descendants of Esau's son's concubine.
[KJV] 36:12 Timnah, the concubine of Eliphaz the son of Esau, bore Amalek to Eliphaz, who were the descendants of Esau's wife Adah.
< King James Version > 36:24 The children of Zibeon were Aja and Ana, and this Ana found a hot spring in the wilderness when she struck her father Zibeon's donkey.
Now let's look at ourselves. When God sees our lives and what we have done, how meaningful and worthwhile life is... Or I may have lived a life that I think I have done but has no value in God's eyes. I bless you in the name of the Lord that you only live a precious and valuable life before God. Amen!
Ex) Realizing this, Paul confesses that he considered the precious things in the past as excrement.
7. The royal dynasty of Esau (verses 31-43)
[KJV] 36:31 These are the kings who reigned in the land of Edom before there was a king who ruled over the children of Israel.
Esau apparently established a monarchy as the land's owner when Israel was merely a wanderer. The existence of a king at that time meant that a nation with great power was born. However, although the Edomites formed a monarchy, God's conclusion to conclude it is verse 43.
< King James Version > 36:43 Chief Magdiel, chief Iram. These were the chiefs of Edom according to their districts and dwellings, and the father of the Edomites was Esau.
This concludes the introduction to the historical Edomites. Although the Edomites are engaged in various forms of government and economic life in various places, they are categorically referring to the fact that they are descendants of Esau, who were excluded from the covenant descendants.
In fact, there is no shining record of the descendants of Esau afterward, and only a few mentions of their sad history of tormenting and destroying Israel. And their history is not long. It rises like a spark for a short time in an era, and when the era is over, it just disappears without leaving a name. As such, it can be confirmed that the protagonists of history are not those with outstanding political and economic abilities, but the descendants of the covenant who experience both suffering and joy in God's will.
conclusion
Who owns the real land?
Who will be the heirs of this whole universe?
Who will inherit the kingdom of God?
The word of the Lord is clear
Not as strong as Esau, nor as wise as Solomon.
Like Jacob, he is a saint who follows the Lord only with meekness and walks with the Lord.
Matthew 5:5 Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth
From a worldly point of view, Jacob's life is incomparable to Esau's, but God eventually fulfilled His will through Jacob, who lived a life of worship before God and valued the promises and blessings. We pray in the name of the Lord that we do not live a life that boasts of the world and pursues things of the world, but that we live a life that is meaningful before God and is truly used in the kingdom of God. Amen!
