Title: Equipped with a bar
Bible: Neh 3:1-14
The text is about the specific details of Nehemiah and the people of Israel working together to rebuild the city. At that time, the city of Jerusalem was a structure connected with 10 gates and 4 towers. This wall construction was carried out under the supervision of about 40 people in charge, divided into sections of the construction in charge. The text contains many touching contents, such as the united loyalty of the middle class led by the leaders and all the people, and the humility that did not reveal the name of Nehemiah, who worked the most. The city gate was the center of life of the people at that time. In a word, the gates typify the life of the saints. The gate is closely related to the life of the saints.
First: It is a double door.
“In those days Eliashib the high priest rose up with his brothers and priests, and he built the sheep gates and sanctified them, and put the doors on them, and built the wall and sanctified it from the Tower of Hammea to the Tower of Hananel” (verse 1).
This sheep gate was built by Eliashib the high priest and his brother priests, the most influential people in Jerusalem. This is the door that leads the sheep to be sacrificed to God. Bethesda pool is located next to this gate (John 5:2), so the sheep that come in through this gate are always washed and prepared there. In this way, we must also have sheep gates in our hearts.
Second: It is a language.
“It was built by the sons of Hasnaa, and had its beams laid on it, and it had doors, and it had locks and bars” (verse 3). This gate was mainly through which fish caught in the Sea of Galilee or the Jordan River were supplied to Jerusalem. Since there was a fish market, it was called Eomun according to the custom of life. This door is the door of evangelism as Jesus said, "Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men" (Matthew 4:19).
Third: This is the old gate.
“The old gate was repaired by Joiada the son of Basea and Meshullam the son of Besodeiah, and put its beams on it, and put the doors on it, and equipped it with locks and bars” (verse 6). (2 Kings 14:13) Zechariah called this gate the first gate. This door is a symbol of good deeds. That is, when the Holy Spirit comes upon us, our behavior changes.
Fourth: There is a valley gate.
“The gate of the valley was repaired by Hanun and the inhabitants of Sanoah, and they built the gate, they put the doors on it, they put locks and bars, and they repaired a thousand cubits of the wall up to the main gate.” (verse 13) The valley gate goes down to the deep valley between Jerusalem and the Mount of Olives to the east. Door. This gate is mainly used by people coming from the west coast. This valley gate is the gate of humility. So, when the Holy Spirit comes, true humility comes. Go down through this gate and you will see the Kidron Valley. There are two types of water flowing through this valley, which is where living water flows along with rainwater.
Fifth: There is a heart.
“The gate was repaired by Malchiiah son of Rechab, who ruled the region of Beth-haggerem, and he erected the gate, put the doors on it, and equipped it with locks and bars” (verse 14). When you go out this door, there is a garbage dump called Valley of Hinnom. But in a spiritual sense this door is a symbol of repentance. In other words, when the Holy Spirit comes, the work of repentance will appear. We must always repent of all the unbelieving, ugly, and evil things in us so that all sinful things must be consumed by the fire of the Holy Spirit.
