Wrong choice in title [Gen 36:1-8]
Title: Wrong choice in
This chapter refers to the descendants of Esau, Jacob's older brother. Immediately after Isaac died at the age of 180 (Gen. 35:28), he did not write about Jacob, but about Esau, so that we could understand the unchosen. In particular, by showing how wrong their choices are, we realize that they are making us make wiser choices.
1. Esau was nicknamed Edom and lived all his life (1).
Later, when the kingdom was built in the Mount Seir region (south of the Dead Sea), the name Edom was also used. However, the name Edom is very offensive to Esau. In Genesis 25:29-34, the background for this name is given. The name Edom was given to Esau in the incident where Esau exchanged the red porridge that Jacob had boiled for his birthright. This is the first time Esau made a wrong choice. Esau disregarded the birthright. That's why he chose a bowl of red bean porridge over the oldest to fill his hungry stomach. His actions to avoid the present hunger while ignoring the spiritual blessings and various benefits given to the firstborn (the things Jacob received) are a good lesson for us. May none of us become fools who turn away from the spiritual and choose the food of the flesh.
2. Esau chose foreign women as his wives (2-3).
3. Esau abandoned the land of Canaan and chose Seir (6-8).
